Personality
Atypical of a Orion female Mari can be impulsive often times vicious to anyone she perceives as a threat but she does her best to keep this under control knowing many are not used to being around Orion women. Being implanted with a pheromone inhibitor has helped Mari contain her impulses making her a “normal” member of the crew though there are times when she slips up and has an outburst of anger. Mari is overall a good person and will do anything to fit in with the Nike and her crew though she does prefer to spend some of her off hours time alone rather than face some social anxiety issues she has.
History
Marina Tarr was born on the Orion controlled world of Verex III an orphan since she was 7 thanks to the regime change in the Syndicate. When Melani D’ian took over she wiped out all of the known followers of Raimus, the previous ruler who her parents were big supporters of. She looked after and cared for but she knew that when she reached her teens she would be forced to work for the Syndicate now that wasn’t so bad but when D’ian signed the treaty with the Klingons Mari knew that there was going to be war and soon. Even at 13 she could see the Klingon Empire’s leaders were becoming increasingly unstable. Mari was sent to live in a Klingon house as a slave thanks to the treaty signed by D’ian luckily the young girl was only 13, too young to make a decent mate for a Klingon, it didn’t stop the other servants from making advances on her. She was 19 when the Klingons withdrew from the Khitomir Accords and Mari had paid enough attention to the galactic politics to know that war was brewing and she needed to get the hell out.
Mari used her Orion pheromones to convince a luckless Klingon freighter captain to carry her into Federation space before the Klingons would be unwelcome from there she bartered passage to Earth and applied for Starfleet Academy under the Dual Citizenship Program of 2389. Given that Mari was an Orion she had to undergo special restrictions before she was allowed admission the restriction being a pheromone inhibitor that would block her from using her powers on any of the instructors at the academy which was just fine with her. Mari worked her butt off at the academy for 4 years before graduating and served on the USS Intrepid as an ensign. Mari worked in engineering because of her love of starship construction and maintenance, many found it odd at first that an Orion would be interested in engines but she wasn’t there to satisfy their curiosity. In her 4 years on the Intrepid she was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and finally Lieutenant when she applied to be transferred to the USS Nike as its Assistant Chief Engineer.

Sample Role Play
Starfleet Command Review Board
Mari was nervous as she stood before the panel of various Starfleet Commanders who would judge her performance on the USS Intrepid and determine if she would be promoted to Lieutenant and serve on the USS Nike. She didn’t know anything about the history of alien races in the Federation but Mari was certain that she was likely the first Orion to serve in Starfleet, mostly because people don’t trust Orions. Her record should speak for itself though she was a good engineer at least she thought so and she had no disciplinary issues…well almost no disciplinary issues. After a few minutes of whispers the lead commander spoke up.
“Well your service record is impressive from Ensign to Lieutenant Junior Grade in four years. We just have a few questions for you. One is why the USS Nike?”
Mari cleared her throat before speaking. “Well sir I feel that I can learn a lot on the Nike, they need an Assistant Chief Engineer and I bring four years of engineering experience to the table so I believe I am qualified sir.” The other commanders looked at each other and Mari had no idea if this was good or bad so she was going to reserve judgment for now on that.
“I see. I also see here in your file that on the USS Intrepid during your first year there were two scuffles in the mess hall with two different ensigns. Would you care to explain that?” Damn it!
“Cultural differences sir, one ensign and I had a minor disagreement on the current state of politics with the Syndicate and the Federation and the issues were later resolved in private between the ensign and I. The second incident was a smart mouth show off couldn’t keep his hands where they belonged.”
The second issue was of particular interest to the commanders. “Why did you not inform Starfleet Security about this?”
“I could handle myself sir, needless to say my point got across that I did not appreciate his unsubtle advances and even put in for a change of shift to make sure we did not see each other in the mess again.”
The commanders looked at each other again and with a few glances the head admiral smiled at Mari. “Well I think we’re done here. Congratulations…lieutenant.” Mari was overcome with joy but she smiled at the admirals before leaving.
