All Systems Ready to Launch

[Commander Pesh'ewa]

After leaving the bridge in the capable hands of their new XO, Pesh'ewa made his way down to main engineering. 

He hadn't walked in a few feet before half the room stood at attention. **The new recruits,** he thought to himself with a smile. Many of them already appeared to be clamoring to get him to notice them. 

"Welcome to all those of you who are just joining us here on the Nike. For those of you who don't know, I'm Commander Pesh'ewa, chief engineer here. What I say goes. If you keep that clear at all times, then we will get along just fine." He walked over towards a console where a young ensign was standing. 

"Ensign," he greeted the young man. 

"Commander," the ensign, with wide peeped at the large Caitian. "Its...It's a pleasure to work with you sir," his voice was still rather high pitched. The Caitian engineer was well known throughout Starfleet, with not many other Caitians having achieved his status. 

"I need you to run a final systems check from this station. I also need you," he pointed to a new lieutenant, "to run a full systems check on the warp core before we fire her up again. I do not want any problems when it is time to launch." Pesh'ewa looked around the room at each face that was looking his way, then with a wave of his hand, they all scattered and starting running the necessary tests to verify all was ready for launch.

[Captain Xian Chen]

**All Hands Whistle Sounds**
//“’By order of Admiral Lara Rell, flag officer of the United Federation of Planet’s Eighth Fleet: Command of the United Federation of Planet’s galaxy-class starship, USS Nike (NCC 71268) is hereby transferred to Captain Xian Alexis Chen as of stardate 85498.12.’

“I hereby assume command of this starship and accept all duties and responsibilities herein.

“I won’t waste time with long speeches. We are about to embark on a potentially dangerous mission. Let’s prepare for departure. We leave for Quo’nos in an hour.

“Chen out.”//

[Lieutenant Marina Tarr]

The yellow and grey uniform was snug on the newly promoted lieutenant but she didn't mind it much. Marina Tarr was a recent transfer from the USS Intrepid and the new assistant chief engineer as well as the first or at least most recent Orion in Starfleet. Marina had gotten settle in her quarters and was wanting to head down to engineering and check out the systems. The Galaxy-class cruiser design was one of the most widely used classes in the Federation the cool part at least to Marina was the saucer separation for combat or emergencies. Marina boarded the turbolift and headed down to engineering until she heard the captain's announcement, the changing of the guard has been handed down. Marina smiled as she stepped off the turbolift and began looking around for the chief engineer, from what she read and heard the man would not be hard to spot.

Marina finally found him and walked up slowly and saluted him. "Lieutenant Marina Tarr sir. I'm your new assistant chief engineer."

He'd heard the Captain's announcement and had ambled around more quickly checking on the systems and his new officers. He wouldn't be able to stop double checking until he knew he could trust their expertise. They were, of course, well trained, but not on how to run the Nike. 

"Lieutenant Marina Tarr sir. I'm your new assistant chief engineer."

He turned and looked at the woman standing before him. Pesh'ewa's mouth turned up in a grin. 

"Well, we will be quite the talk of Starfleet, won't we? A Caitian and and Orion running a Galaxy class ship." He chuckled a bit. "Let's give them all something to remember at the end of this voyage shall we?" He grinned. 

"Why don't you pop over to that station and run the last checks on the Warp Core. We need to make sure everything is perfectly aligned before the Captain calls for us to go to warp. They just retrofitted the connectors after our last voyage. These new ones should withhold a lot more stress before we see problems, but I wanted a full analysis of the stats on them before we pull out of dock so we'll know exactly what to expect in the future."

He had given her the task both to gather the necessary information and also to see how she worked. He needed to have a good solid understanding of how she went about things in order to work closely as a team together.

Marina smiled at his comment about giving Starfleet something to talk about when having two aliens running the ship which was technically true because engineering actually keeps the ship going. "Lets hope what they talk about is not how we let the ship get stolen or blown up because I would like to keep my job sir." The lieutenant nodded to her superior and rushed to the console calling up the information requested. Marina had spent most of the night reading up on the retrofits the Nike received and she wanted to make sure everything was going to go smoothly.

"Stress threshold has been improved by 15 percent which amazes me. Never could get more than 9 percent on the Intrepid." She turned her head to look at the commander. "I guess they like us aliens running the ships." Marina examined the schematics and data for another minute before speaking again. "We can probably push the maximum stress threshold beyond that 15 percent to 20 but any more than that and we risk a breach in the warp core and then we all die. In other words they're good."

He gave her a smile and a nod. Her assessment was correct. It wasn't long after that the call came through and the ship was soon on it's way to its first mission.

"Why don't you familiarize yourself with the rest of engineering and the ship while we have some time on our trip?" Pesh'ewa suggested. He wanted his new assistant there, but he also wanted her to be as familiar with anything they might need in an emergency situation. 

Everything seemed to be running smoothly as they moved through space. 

"Let me know if you have any questions." It was important that he guided and helped her. His years of experience on the ship were not something she would have after just arriving. It would take time and practice to be prepared for anything.

Marina nodded to the chief and began to look back over the console that she had accessed to see what was new and improved on the ship and after that she would need to establish baseline engineering stats for any and all future inspections and from the looks of all the systems she would need to start on that as soon as she could. The removed a padd from her pocket and began recording data. "I will get started on familiarizing myself with the systems now and let you know as soon as I find any inconsistencies or IF I find any inconsistencies." Marina tapped her padd and whisked herself away from the console and began her assistant chief duties before take off.

"Very well," Pesh'ewa replied to his new assistant. He watched her walk away with her PADD in hand. He smiled to himself. He knew she was already going through calculations and things in her mind. It was just like any good engineer would do.

The warp core had a lovely glow to it, indicating all was as it should be. He smiled once again. His hand resting on the casing that surrounded the core. It was a beautiful thing.

"Commander Pesh'ewa, sir," a voice interrupted his train of thought. He turned and saw an officer he didn't know before him.

"Captain Chen would like you to join her in her ready room immediately, sir."

"Ah, I'll be right there," Pesh'ewa replied. He hadn't gotten to meet her when she arrived, unlike the First Officer who had taken over for him. He was looking forward to seeing exactly what the new captain was like.

After noting what he needed on his own logs, he turned and made his way to the turbolift and the bridge.
