Personality
Olivia is nurturing and patient. She sees potential in those around her and encourages them to reach for the stars...quite literally at times. She's not easily flustered in difficult situations and is most times the voice of reason when things get out of hand. Her motherly nature assist in her ability to gain the trust of those around her. She finds that if her crew believe their their concerns are being heard they will trust in her decisions and follow her lead. There's nothing she dislikes more than nonsensical rage and arguments among staff.
Olivia is a leader by nature and a follower when the time calls for it. She does not believe that her word is the final one. She listens to the opinions around her and works alongside her team, becoming a voice in decisions rather than the dictator of them. She's not afraid to put her foot down though. When lives are at risk she's more than capable of giving orders.

History
Olivia was raised by two adoptive parents. Her paternal parents, especially her mother, could not take care of her. Money was not the issues. She simply was not mature enough to raise a child and was convinced by her parents to give Olivia up. Adopted at the age of three and raised in London, Olivia had the best childhood a kid could hope for. Her parents, Gregory and Samantha, free lance photographers, taught her to be a free spirit. They encourage individuality and imagination. They want life for her to be a blank canvas to be scribbled on and filled with the adventures and discoveries of a bright-eyed child.
Olivia excelled in academics and the arts. While photography wasn't her strong point, she took an interest in painting. Landscapes and animal portraits were her favorite subjects. With such a love for art, it came as a bit of a surprise that Liv would pursue a life in Starfleet. Her parents were taken aback by her decision to join the Academy. She joined, not with the intention of leading a ship or being in charge. She only wanted to explore the universe and see what existed outside of the Earth's atmosphere. Space was an entirely new canvas for her to scribble upon and make her mark.
It took quite a bit of determination on her part to achieve acceptance into the Academy. At the age of nineteen she was admitted. Olivia pursed the science track with a focus on sociology. She graduated without remarkable honors, but proved herself to be a remarkable asset to the vessels she was assigned to. Olivia is personable and approachable. She's serious about her work without coming off as overbearing. She has a way with humans and other races that allow her to gain trust. Her background in sociology proved vital in first contact situations. Her natural curiosity while aboard the USS Grant lead to a life saving discovery that saved the life of the ship's Captain.
She never planned to pursue a command position. This path was suggested to her by her superiors while completing an assignment on the USS Loriant. She had the patience and tenacity to lead. This had be proven while aboard the Loriant and various other assignments. She entered command school and excelled much to her surprise. A few short years later, after many challenges, failures and successes, Olivia was promoted to executive officer of the USS Nike. The promotion couldn't have come at a better time.
She had recently lost her mother to a fatal accident. Grief still fresh in her heart, Olivia retreated to Earth to take care of her aging father. This new assignment would give her the distraction she needed to mourn without falling into the hole of despair she could feel trying to overwhelm her.
She can't wait to see what lies ahead. With her mother watching over her, she knows she'll be able to face whatever comes her way.

Sample Role Play
Olivia stood in the mirror, her flowing blonde curls loose around her face and shoulders. She stood a woman recently arrived from London where she had visited her father. The tears that had wet her eyes and cheeks were now long gone to be replaced by an expression of determination. Her mother was gone. The strongest female she had ever known would no longer grace her with her smile, her touch, her words of wisdom. She had returned to London to piece together the broken fragments of a marriage come to an end. Her father had been a mess. He needed her more than she knew. Spending two weeks grieving with him had been, oddly enough, the happiest days of her life. He recounted stories of his love for his wife. He told Olivia that adopting her was the best decision they had ever made together. She was their daughter. Blood truly did not matter. The love she felt in that moment would last a life time. Before she departed, he gave her his wife's wedding ring; a gift his mother wanted to pass onto her; their first adopted daughter. It fit perfectly.
Gaze shifting downward, Olivia unbuttoned her dress. The soft, cotton fabric of her black skirt slid over the smooth curves of her hips and pooled around her feet. Next she removed the blue blouse she'd been wearing; tossing that aside as well. Stepping across the room she took up her uniform. Pressed to show each sharp line, her uniform looked like a statue of accomplishment, a token of how far she had come. It was gaining this particular honor that had been the reason she had missed so much of her life back on Earth. Her sister always said she worked too much. Perhaps she was right.
Olivia slipped into the uniform and then pulled her hair back into a tight bun at the base of her nap. She looked professional. There was no lingering signs of grief to give her away. She had agreed to the assignment because she needed to get away; to be of use to someone other than herself. Today she would step into the role of the second most important person on the USS NIKE. While others would be nervous, Olivia was ready for the challenge.
Kissing her mother's ring one last time, Olivia left the confines of her apartment.
