“Captain,” she said softly. “Captain, can you hear me?” She looked down at the twisted and broken body of a man she had come to admire and esteem over the past three years. A man she was proud to call her friend. As his eyes began to flutter open Phoebe gave a small nod to the medic to leave the privacy shield. The sedative she had given him was slowly wearing off and he was creeping back toward consciousness.
“Ph-ph-Phoebe,” he muttered his voice hoarse.
She leaned toward him so that her face fell into his line of sight. “Yes, Bill it’s me. I’m here.”
“How is she,” he asked.
Phoebe smirked. He is lying here in complete agony and his first question is about the ship. Why was she not surprised? “We took heavy damage and more casualties than I care to admit. But we managed to out maneuver the cube and have eliminated all Borg on board. The remaining personnel are doing what they can while we make our way back to space dock. Don’t worry,” she said gently patting his shoulder. “She will survive…and so will you.”
“Glad to hear it,” he said weakly. “Thank you Commander Sutherland.” A sly smirk appeared at the corner of his mouth. “Be careful,” he started to say and then groaned in pain. Phoebe moved to give him another dose of the sedative, but she stopped when he motioned that he was alright. “You may find that command suits you.”
She smiled down at him. “Not me Bill, give me sickbay over the bridge any day. I’m just keeping your seat warm for you. Now you rest,” she said picking up the hyprospray. “I’ll wake you if things change. For now, just sleep.”
Phoebe sat with him while he drifted off then closed the stasis chamber. She knew through experience that Captain Lester would be a resident of Starfleet Medical for quite a long time while he recovered from his injuries. Her heart went out to him. Deep down she knew he would pull through, but right now her optimism was wearing a little thin.
Wiping away a tear that escaped, Phoebe stood and straightened her uniform. Taking a deep breath she said, “Computer, lower privacy shield.” Looking out at the overcrowded sickbay full of people she knew and cared for, Phoebe felt a second wind blow over her.
Walking over to Ensign Ryan she said, "Sickbay is yours. I'll be heading back to the bridge. Please keep me informed of any changes is the Captain's condition." With renewed fervor she whispered to herself, “Time to get back to work.”
