Character's Name: Ensign Fel Akady
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Race: Lyridian
Physical Profile (height, build, weight, hair color, eye color, skin tone, race, etc.): Fel Akady is a relatively slender humanoid, physiologically identical to a human. The only Lyridian giveaway is her eyes: the tapetum lucidum in her eyes produces eyeshine, much like a cat or a dog. Similarly, her pupils will extend to cover a massive portion of her iris, part of the visual sensitivity the Lyridians developed to increase accuracy in astrometrics as well as ease at stargazing. Unless focused or reflected, her eyes are the normal brown of any human. Her hair is cropped and short, and she stands at about 5'7" with moderately pale skin. She has the words "Ex Astris, Scientia" tattooed in script between her shoulder blades.
Birthplace: Utopia Planitia, Mars, Sol System
Preferred rank: Ensign
Department: Science officer (Astrometrics)
Personality: Fel is an incredibly focused and down to earth (down to space station?) individual. When on the job, she is entirely focused on the task at hand and has little patience for distractions. This manifests in snarky remarks and subtle snipes from time to time to try and catch people off guard and steer them back on topic from embarrassment if nothing else. On the clock, this lingering habit shows Fel to be a rather clever individual with an overactive sense of humor, which manifests even more off the clock. Fel takes well to groups, but is relatively introspective and will keep to herself most of the time unless engaged by another, a side effect of her love of learning and difficulty growing up in a human colony.
Background and History:
Fel's Lyridian parents had spent their entire life traveling the known universe to expand on the renowned Lyridian star charts, giving their daughter a love of astrometrics from an early age. She was born aboard their ship and looked after by her mother, as well as a human woman from medbay who took a great interest in ensuring the child's safety through uncharted space. Eventually, the family pursued retirement, settling down immediately in the first colony they came to with the completion of their mission. Landing in the Utopia Planitia station, they were quick to settle down in the Utopia colony.
The Akady family had little trouble blending in with the human population, and their then 2-year-old daughter was used to humans from life aboard a Starfleet vessel. She fit in well enough, save her peculiar eyes and sharp intellect. Finding it difficult to sustain prolonged conversations with other humans her age, Fel developed a somewhat reclusive habit, despite the insistence of her mother. There were instances where the young Akady girl would be locked out of her house to make her 'go play' with the other humans. She did so resentfully, and developed social skill at ridiculing others in subtle ways. She didn't become an incredibly mean girl, but she did make her derision of others known when it was pleasant.
When she was fifteen, she met another girl named Jessica Daltir, a human of admirable intellect. As such, they hit it off almost immediately. Fel had finally found an individual with whom she could share her love of astrometrics, and Jessica found someone who didn't mind her talking about traveling space all the time 'when they grew up'. It was Jessica who had convinced Fel to join the Starfleet Academy, something Fel's parents had avoided pressuring her into (as they were of the opinion it was an idea she should have). Fel loved the idea, and the two became attached at the hip in preparation of entering the academy.
They both attended the Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program at the age of seventeen, and did exceptionally well. Proceeding from there, they both submitted applications for the Starfleet Academy, making big plans for the future: systems they'd travel to, a ship and crew they'd eventually have for themselves, with Jessica as the Captain and Fel as the Chief Helmsman. The two had their next fifteen years planned out, and were ecstatic to find they'd both had their applications accepted. Fel flew through the following examinations, confident in her acceptance to the Academy. She and Jessica waited on bated breath for their test results to come in. Sadly, that day would be the end of their friendship.
When the examination results arrived, Fel Akady had been accepted into the Starfleet Academy. Jessica Daltir did not. The teen flew into a fit of rage, disavowing the academy. Fel tried to pacify her, by encouraging her to try again next year, offering to bypass the acceptance and wait until they could enter together, or just give up on the whole thing. Jessica didn't seem to favor any option and instead shot down Fel as a friend and kicked her out of the house.
Even now that Fel is an Ensign about to embark on her first ship, Jessica has not spoken to her.
The rather harsh severance of her friendship left Fel relatively reclusive throughout Starfleet Academy. On the plus side, it helped her to focus her attention on grades and learning, enabling her to complete a 7 year course in only 5 years, with a degree in Astrometrics, and a tattoo of "Ex Astris, Scientia" across her back to celebrate it. The Academy was a breath of fresh air in that she wasn't surrounded by vapid human colonists, but rather intelligent and capable individuals of all walks of life. The 5 years pulled her out of her shell a little, but she didn't make any long-lasting friendships, based on the concern of losing another friend upon graduation or something equally ridiculous.
Fortunately, when the USS Nike docked in Utopia Planitia looking for a fresh crew, the recently graduated Ensign Fel Akady with about six months of local astrometric experience under her belt managed to procure a spot onboard without breaking anyone's heart.

Sample Roleplay:
Fel was in the simulated astrometrics lab. Shocking, I know. She was seated at the computer with her small hands set to work. Lips, while met, shifted a bit here and there as she sorted through various thoughts and numbers in her head, doing all she could to not murmur them aloud. Not that there was any profound reason for restraint... the astrometrics lab was empty. At least in that point in time.
Sadly, the silence was warranted, as with a soft hum the doors behind her opened and one of the instructors entered the room. Fel's left eye twitched slightly as she recognize the heavy footsteps of the man that had been the source of her irritation since she got here. She did what she could to pay him no mind, dark eyes focused on the screen as she leaned in. A few short strands of brown hair fell down towards her eyes, but were quickly tossed aside with a quick shake of her head. No distractions. She was in the zone.
The two were silent for a period of time, Fel not once pausing as she continued to scan down the simulated system placed into the computer. The instructor folded his hands behind his back, tapping a foot slowly and steadily in an auditory variation of the Chinese Water Torture. Fel's dilated eyes would twitch every three or four taps out of a building irritation. Must not sass talk... Must not sass talk...
The instructor chuckled lowly as he observed Fel focusing on the planet on the outer ring of the system. Her jaw was set in resolve, brow furrowed as her pupils continued to expand, now rendering her eyes almost fully black. After another pause, the instructor finally spoke up. "Having some trouble with Planet VII there, Akady?"
"There may be a glitch in the system, sir." The words had been bubbling on her tongue since she'd noticed, but she'd respectfully repressed them until the instructor decided to be snarky about it.
The instructor, in the mean time, laughed. "I think that's highly unlikely, Akady. We've been using the same system for years."
"Was it updated in 2401, sir?" The response was quick as she continued to focus. The screen settled within 3AU of the planet and continued to scan from all sides, occasionally traveling along the orbit of the planet and scanning around there. The instructor paused, considering this, and his smile slowly faded.
"...no. Not since double ought. Why do you ask?"
Fel's lips started to curve into a bit of a smirk, but it was on the opposite side of her face than the instructor. Regardless, she put her Starfleet deadpan back on posthaste. "In 2401, sir, there was an update that went out to all actual onboard Starfleet software regarding a new equation used to more accurately assess the displacement put on a system's star by the planets around it. The solar displacement is such that there should be one more orbital body, but I can't find any signals past 3AU outside of the last planet, and the simulation doesn't extend beyond 5AU. If the software wasn't updated, the equations I'm putting in may overcompensate for what would be the spatial displacement of an actual sun in the interest of computer programmed numbers."
The instructor looked none too pleased. He furrowed his brow and just stared at the screen, slowly accepting the flaw in the system. "Why are you scanning for the solar displacement of the system?" The voice was slightly resentful. The man was not fond of being outsmarted. Especially not by the girl who kept doing it.
"One should always double check their work, sir." The voice was a little too gentle not to be smart-ass.
The instructor scowled. "The assignment was to scan down seven planets. You've completed the assignment. You are dismissed, Akady."
Fel rose quickly from the seat, turning to give a respectful salute to the instructor and suppress her smile as best she could. Letting her hand fall, she turned from the screen and instructor with a bit of an eyeroll and moved from the lab slow enough to hear him swear quietly at the computer.
