Both messages reached Pesh'ewa's ears. He glanced over at the instruments on the table, nodding.
"Sir," he said as he approached the Caitian, "If I may scan you as well?"
"Go ahead," Pesh said with a nod. Once the officer was done, Pesh'ewa turned to the group.
"For those of you who don't know me yet, I am Commander Pesh'ewa, head of engineering. With our turbolifts down we are basically crippled. From the scans I have conducted there has been a disruption in the electromagnetic fields that work the turbolift system. With such a wide-spread problem, the only way to repair it is physically crawling through each turbolift shaft, testing and repairing all the electromagnetic conduits." Pesh'ewa paused, then picked up one of the devices on the table.
"This is an electromagnetic synthemometer. It has been programmed to do everything. You simply need to get it to the conduits and run it along each of the four conduits in each and every turbolift corridor. This is by no means an easy task on a galaxy glass starship. I have divided the turbolift shafts around the ship into 120 segments. We will need to send teams to each segment to test and repair the damage." Pesh'ewa paused once again, glancing around at the others.
"The synthemometer will emit a low-level electromagnetic pulse when it detects a disruption in the current flowing through the conduits. Make sure you keep the device directly on the conduits, we don't need any of you consuming large doses of radiation that can be emitted if the devices are not properly used." Pesh'ewa began handing out the devices and gave the group a quick rundown of just how easy it was to use them properly.
"Ensign Vaughn, I am sending you the information you need to calibrate a synthemometer. If you are able, you can tackle..." Pesh paused and looked at the schematic of turbolift sections, "Sections 85-90." He had heard her comment that she was on light duty, "I do not want you to extend your resources. If after you complete those sections you are able to do more, please do so. Ensign Fau'cheth will coordinate which sections have been completed and which still need repaired."
He looked around at the crowd once more. "While it will limit our resources some, I think it will be best if we work in pairs. Realize you will be crawling and climbing through all horizontal and vertical turbolift shafts. Watch out for your partner. We do not need anyone injured by a fall. Understood?" He waited for a response from the crowd.
Pesh began pointing out partner teams, trying to pair up some more senior officers with other, younger, more inexperienced officers. Not every team was able to have someone with engineering skills, but that was the way things were on the Nike at the moment.
Pesh'ewa ended up assigning Walter and Joe, who had seemed very uncertain about the whole endeavor, so putting him with his second seemed the best combination. He next assigned M'Ral and Rhee to a team, then looked at Tricia.
"Lieutenant, you are with me." After that, Pesh'ewa gave each team a PADD showing the schematic of the turbolift shafts and an assigned section. "Everyone reports directly to Ensign Fau'cheth on the bridge as soon as any section is complete. Ensign," Pesh'ewa spoke directly to Fau'cheth on the bridge, "if anyone reports any anomalies, please contact me immediately so we can remedy the situation." Then, looking back at the group he added, "Be careful everyone."
He motioned to an access panel close to their location, which would provide most of the teams with easy access to the turbolift. He then turned back to the counter, creating a set of explicit directions for any new arrivals to contact Fau'cheth on the bridge, take a synthemometer and get to work.
