Personality
Malia has that focused, driven edge to her that is found in most Trill who are striving to become one of the chosen few to receive a host. Unlike most overachievers, Malia isn’t the stereotypical quiet intellectual. She is outgoing and fun loving with a zeal for life that shines through her big personality. Only time will tell how the Odan symbiont will affect her behaviors.
History
Born and raised on Trill, Malia knew from an early age that she wanted to be one of the chosen few to be joined with a symbiont. She was very focused on this goal and worked hard to excel in her studies and extracurricular activities in order to present herself as a desirable candidate for the program. Once she had reached suitable age she applied to the Trill Symbosis Commission for joining and underwent the rigorous testing to process in order to have her application accepted.
Her desire to become joined was not singular. She also had her sights set on a career in Starfleet. Malia made great use of her time at the Academy. In addition to a very active social life, she gained degrees in Linguistics, Stellar Cartography and Astrophysics. After graduation, Malia was assigned to serve aboard the Carolina as an Operations officer.
Within eight months of joining the crew Malia received word from the Symbosis Commission that she would soon be accompanied by a field docent to undergo further instruction and evaluation for joining. Kareel Odan soon arrived to act as Malia’s docent and observe and evaluate her suitability in a real world environment.
Within a few weeks of Kareel’s arrival the Carolina was attached by the Borg. Malia and Kareel were some of the lucky few who were rescued by the Nike. Unfortunately, Kareel was mortally wounded in the attack. It was decided that the Odan symbiont would be transferred to Malia. The Nike’s talented surgeon performed the procedure during their return to Utopia Planitia. Malia has now been joined with the symbiont Odan and has joined Nike’s crew.

Sample Role Play
Malia sat next to the woman she had come to respect. Watching as she struggled to hold on to her life. It was still difficult to believe that she had somehow followed a path that had lead to this dark conclusion. She had always dreamed of the day when she would be told that she, Malia Keao, had been selected to be the host to a symbiont. But her dreams had never included this sad scenario.
Her time was short. They would be arriving soon to take her into the operating room to separate Odan from Kareel. Malia was at a loss for words. There were so many emotions going through her in this moment. It was difficult to sort through them all.
Kaleel lifted her hand and reached out to grasp Malia’s. “Come closer Malia,” she said in a hushed voice. “I have something I need to say to you.”
Malia leaned over toward the woman and gave her a look of warmth and concern. Soon they would share a very unique and special relationship. Malia did not want to dwell on that. She simply wanted to experience these final moments with this remarkable woman.
“I wish to say, that you were not selected out of necessity Malia,” Kareel said and squeezed her hand gently. “I had already forwarded my report regarding my findings to the Symposis Commission. I had affirmed your application and stated that I had felt that you were the ideal candidate.”
There were no words to describe how Malia felt. She could not think of a single thing to say in this moment as she looked into Kaleel face with tear filled eyes. All she could to was cling to her hand and nod her head. With those words, one of her greatest fears had been eliminated.
“I am honored that you will be the next host for Odan,” Kaleel smiled at her and then closed her eyes. “I need to rest now. I’m so very tired.”
Malia kissed the back of her hand and placed it gently back on the bed. “Thank you Kaleel. Rest well...”
