"Thank you Captain," Brice acknowledged. He looked around the table at those gathered. They were all just coming together and there would be much they would learn from each other. Brice knew his time with them would be short. His task only to see the Evadnian mission to completion, yet, he wanted to offer his own contribution to these bright, young officers. A momentary pang of regret flashed through him, as he wished for the chance to command a fine team like these men and woman once again.
"As it turns out," he began, "I was the executive officer on the Evergreen when we first made contact with the people of Evadne years ago. Little did we know at that time just how xenophobic the people were. We nearly found ourselves thrown off the nearest cliffs and blown out of the sky by the fears. It took some doing, but we learned enough about their land and peoples to finally get some of them to agree to speak with us. You will find them very wary of any and all strangers. They will not be easy to communicate with. It is my intention to share with you all my crew learned so that we will not make the same mistakes again. The message Starfleet received last week was the first invitation from Evadne since the Evergreen departed their world with a promise to not visit again unless invited. Needless to say, I cannot impress upon you all just how important this mission is. We need to learn what makes the Evadnians resistant to the Borg, but we must do so with caution and openness. The very last thing we want to see happen is for the people to draw back into themselves and refuse to work with us."
Brice stopped, having delivered a rather lengthy speech, to allow all that he had said to sink in.
"There are two main factions on the planet, which have never truly seen eye to eye. Their own fear has kept them from uniting themselves as one people. The two leaders have requested our assistance in helping the people to come together. In exchange they have agree to allow us to come to their world to try and obtain the research we seek. While we are invited it will still not be easy to convince the common people to accept us in their midst."
Brice looked to Lara, to see what else she would like to add.
