“Our Security Chief is Vulcan and Romulan so I believe his logical mind will see the wisdom behind having a Marine contingent aboard, Hopefully that will help to balance out any animosities.”
She nodded. As the Chief goes so does the staff, was a pretty normal assumption. On her first command she’d learned that one the hard way when she went crossways with the Operations Chief. It took monumental patience and finesse to repair that one. She didn’t care to repeat that with this ship and from the look on her XO’s face he knew the pitfalls. She would just leave it in his capable hands. She hoped that Phoebe’s analysis was solid and she had no reason to suspect otherwise.
Having a Marine contingent aboard could present it’s challenges, she was fully aware of that but given the intelligence she had seen recently they were going to need them. Badly. If rumor was correct the CO of the contingent was an acquaintance and certainly very capable.
“Our biggest hits were to Operations and Engineering. We lost most of the ranking officers in those departments to either severe injury or death.”
She saw the shadow of sadness in the Commander’s eyes and steeled herself against the selfsame reaction. She and Bill had once been very close and she hurt for him in a way these two would never know. This was one of the hardest things about Command but she wouldn’t give it up until they made her the first time. Now they’d given her the chair again and they’d have to drag her kicking and screaming to get her off the bridge.
“Ok,” she said “I’ll make a few calls and see where we stand on the replacements in those areas.” She looked at Commander Federov “If you wish to continue here, I’ll go make some calls and see if I can get Alfredo to push some more buttons and alleviate the bureaucratic inertial dampeners in Personnel. Otherwise, I think we all have a great deal of work to do and I know you’re anxious to get started.” Turning back to Phoebe. “Doctor, try and get some rest in the near future. We’re going to need you in top form” she knew she didn’t need to go further than that. She was very pleased with what she had seen of her command staff so far.
