Ladies and Gentlemen of the Nike this is the Captain. Please pause with me for a moment as we remember those with whom we have served.
Their mission was almost complete, and we lost them so close to home. The men and women of the USS Carolina had journeyed billions of miles and were days away from arrival and reunion when they were faced with ovewhelming odds. USS Nike came to her aid but not in time. The loss was sudden and terrible, and for their families, the grief is heavy. The Federation shares in your sorrow and in your pride. And today we remember not only one moment of tragedy, but twenty seven lives of great purpose and achievement.
To leave behind Earth and air and gravity is an ancient dream of humanity. For these twenty seven, it was a dream fulfilled. Each of these Starfleet Officers and Crew had the daring and discipline required of their calling. Each of them knew that great endeavors are inseparable from great risks. And each of them accepted those risks willingly, even joyfully, in the cause of discovery.
Sean Alexander in the hour of his greatest trial sacrificed his own life for the life of his friend Willian Lester.
Stenn held multiple degrees from the Vulcan Science Academy yet found the pull of the stars as his true calling.
Venal was a Scientist first and formost yet he was the first to defend his crewmates and saved many lives in the process.
Klaar was a man of great adventure from a noble house. His warcry as he waded into the enemy bare handed will surely bring him safely to Stovokor. He brought honor on his house.
John Henderson promised to serve and protect his fellow officers and he did so with his life. His friends and crewmates will miss his quick smile and boundless energy.
[the Captain continued through all 27 of the lost crew]
We will now hold one minute of silence for our fallen crewmates.
[the time ticked down from 60 to 0]
That is all.
