Celebrating Friendships and New Beginnings

Tricia had taken some time after her friend left to primp a little for the Reception. When the Captains speach came over the comm she'd bowed her head with the rest of the crew and could feel the good will all around her. After, she picked up a picture of Stenn and her they'd taken on their last leave. She kissed him and went to get ready for the wake.

He always liked it when she wore a dress so she pulled out a nice yellow floral print sundress with almost invisible straps and a built in bra. She even put on strappy heels and left her hair down.

"Some security officer you are" she thought at herself. But then she decided that for tonight she just wasn't going to do that. She was going to celebrate Stenn. Tucking her comm badge inside her clevage she looked one last time. "Where would I ever put a phaser in this dress?" it didn't leave a whole lot to the imagination.

In the turbo lift she got a few sidewas glances from an ops ensign who didn't quite know what to make of her. She giggled when she got off on 10.

It had been awhile since she'd worn heels and she was just a little wobbly at first but hit her stride as she walked through the doors. Across the room she spotted Alexis still at dinner with... "woah..." she wasn't kidding! she gave her friend a wink and thumbs up.

Then she spotted Joe. She smiled as she moved toward him "Hey Joe" she said.

The woman was an unstoppable force and Vhatter let himself be dragged along to the party and into the room. It was not customary to let someone else touch him, unless they were mated, but somehow Zaynah's youthful exuberance made it seem okay.

"You are wrinkling the fabric," he laughed as she tugged on his sleeve. He chose a simple tunic style brown top with matching trousers. Zaynah, it seemed, was more festively attired in a bright white baby-doll style dress. And she was... hello! How had he not noticed she was barefoot.

"C'mon, Vhatter, let's get a drink."

"All right. What do you--" A boyish grin tugged at his mouth. "Tricia," he muttered, "wow..."

Rhee felt a bit foolish. Here he was in 10 Forward and he didn't know what to do with himself. He had come to join in the gathering after the memorial announcement, though he hadn't known any of the crew. He wanted to jump right into the festivities, but social situations were not exactly his forte, as he had told the counselor earlier in this very same room.

That was when Rhee spotted Joe. He started to make his way over to the group gathering near him, but he held back a bit. It looked like they were engaged in a conversation already. He didn't want to intrude. Why was it that when it came to work, he could jump right in, no problem, talk to anyway at all, but when it came to socializing. He was at a complete loss. He figured it had to do with growing up in a time when suspicious were part of Bajor's history. So much changed in such a short amount of time then.

"Tricia, wow..."

Zaynah punched her new-found friend, "easy big fellow... pace yourself."

"I don't think we've met however. I'm Joe."

"Zaynah. Are you the--"

"You look stunning, In fact, I would say you light up the room."

She put her hands on her hips after his outburst to Tricia, "and what am I, chopped entrails?" What was it with the men and Tricia? Sure, she was gorgeous, but Zaynah was no slouch either. She wished she had been born a redhead like a lot of the Orions. Cursing her dark hair, she walked over to the bar and got a fruity concoction with an umbrella sticking out of it and a piece of pineapple stuck along the rim. She returned to the little group, "her hair gleams in the lights, too," she added.

"Yeah, I must have missed the memo that said this was a fancy gathering."

"It is in my opinion," Tara said, "that a Celebration should not include clothing that would make one uncomfortable. My brothers all say, when I get married, that I will most likely still be wearing my gun. Of course, several of them were convinced by their wives to put on the monkey suits." She smiled at him, "Private Tara Mack."

"Let the games begin," she thought, wondering how he felt about the Marine presence.

"So... let me understand this correctly. People died, there was a memorial... and now we are to have fun?" She shook her head, "that doesn't make sense. Getting drunk afterwards, I understand... but shouldn't we celebrate their lives while they still are alive?"

Malia had been released from sickbay after her recovery from the symbiont transfer only a few hours ago. She knew it was necessary, but her time in recovery had been extremely boring. There was a party tonight and she was ready to let loose and have some fun.

She spent some quality time pruning and preening as she prepared to mingle with her fellow crew members for the first time. After applying some eyeliner, mascara and a shiny pink gloss to her lips, she ran a brush through her long, dark tresses and then went to pull on her dress. Malia had selected a little black dress for the occasion: a v-neck fitted jersey dress that fell about mid thigh. She paired it with a simple silver necklace and dangly matching earrings. Sitting down on the edge of her bed she pulled on a pair of open-toed ankle strapped heels and took one last look in the mirror before heading to 10 Forward.

By the time she arrived it seemed that there were several groups of people paired up and engrossed in conversation. Malia made her way over to the bar and took a seat on one of the stools where she would have a good vantage point. She ordered herself a drink and then looked out over the crowd. People watching had been a past time for more than one of Odan’s previous hosts and she could not help but sit and indulge the inclination.

"So... let me understand this correctly. People died, there was a memorial... and now we are to have fun? that doesn't make sense. Getting drunk afterwards, I understand... but shouldn't we celebrate their lives while they still are alive?"

Rhee chuckled at her words. She had an ease about her that actually put him at ease. Somehow knowing she was a marine, someone who shared some of his own values for security and protection made relax a bit more.

"Apparently, that's what this is. I guess it's an Earth tradition? Personally, we Bajorans feel that once others have died, their pau is already making the journey to the Celestial Temple. Either way, I agree that we should celebrate them when they are alive. Perhaps that's the point of this party. Maybe it's a way to celebrate us while we are all here together." Rhee shrugged, not really understanding any of these traditions. He watched others go to a large bowl of some colored liquid. Punch, he believed humans called it.

"Would you like a drink?" He asked, moving away from the wall, planning to get them both a drink. He'd heard many of the others introduce himself, though he didn't really know any of them.

As he filled up the glasses and carried them back, handing one to Tara, he observed the group. A Denobulan, perhaps, an Orion, with a quick wit, from what he'd heard, and a Trill. But otherwise the group was mostly human. It was always fascinating to learn about new people, but the one thing about Starfleet that Rhee didn't like was the fact that he didn't often get to interact with those of his own race or who shared similar beliefs. True, there were many more Bajorans in Starfleet now than ever before, but they certainly didn't out-number the humans.

"Would you like to join me at the bar?" He asked Tara, thinking perhaps if he sat he would feel more like part of the group, compared to feeling like an out-sider, as he did now. He moved over to the Trill, who also seemed to have separated herself a bit.

"Mind if we join you?" He asked, wondering if Tara had actually followed him or not. "I'm Ensign Mitra," he told her, trying to find a way to break the ice in conversation. All this small-talk and introductions were a bit trying. He wished he could just announce his name, rank, and position to everyone and then just jump into conversation like they were old friends, rather than awkward, getting to know you silences.
